In addition to our full-day program at the Inclusion Summit on Early Learning and Child Care on October 20, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Kathryn Underwood to the Kids Included Learning Lab on Tuesday, October 21!
Dr. Underwood will present a special half-day session intended for policymakers, researchers, and early learning sector leaders. Her presentation is entitled: “Disabled Children’s Participation in a National Childcare Strategy: What Are We Learning?”
About Kathryn Underwood
Dr. Underwood is a professor in the School of Early Childhood Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research interests are in disabled children and their families’ experiences and contributions to our understanding of social services, social life, and society. The focus of her program of research has been on how constructions of disability in early childhood programs and care, early intervention, and health and social service contexts are used to organize children, with particular interest in intersectional identities of all disabled children. Dr. Underwood has conducted a number of studies that focus on parent viewpoints and the work of families to engage with institutions.
About the Presentation
In this session, Dr. Underwood will discuss the need to de-centre "normal" and re-centre diversity of experience in policy related to early childhood and early learning. A framework informed by family experiences navigating service systems will examine access and liminal space including wait times; enhancing childcare options, advocacy and support for parents, and collaboration across systems.
